4 Reasons to Purge Your Closet Today

There’s something about spring that makes me want to clean every aspect of my house, even my closet. Like many people, I struggle with shopping way too much and keeping clothing way past their prime. This means I do a massive closet purge every spring. And although I dread doing it every year, I always feel better afterwards.

While you can easily find a list of tips for purging your closet, it’s hard to find a list of reasons why you should purge your closet. So here’s a list to fill that void:

1.) Space

If you’re like me and only sort through your closet once a year, you definitely have some clothes that are taking up valuable space. A good rule of thumb is to get rid of anything you haven’t worn in over a year. And if you really have to think about the last time you wore something, get rid of it.

After getting rid of some clothes, you’ll have extra open space. This doesn’t mean you should rush to the mall and purchase new clothes to fill that space. Instead, use the extra space to store other things, such as sheets, towels, or even books. If you have a large space and really want to get creative, create your own mini bar.

2.) Donation

Donating clothes is extremely important. The reality is: while you might have a closet bursting behind the doors, many people don’t. So, those pair of pants you never returned that aren’t your size and that coat you purchased for one event can be put to good use. You can donate them to churches and charities in your area.

Another option is donating your clothes to people you know. For example, if you have a bunch of maternity clothing and someone you know just announced they’re pregnant, consider offering them your maternity clothes.

While donating is important, you should only donate something that is in good condition. When deciding if something should be donated, try imagine yourself wearing it. If you wouldn’t want to wear that piece of clothing, then you shouldn’t donate it. And if you really have to debate whether or not it’s in good enough condition to donate, then you probably shouldn’t donate it.

3.) Extra Money

It doesn’t hurt to have a little bit of extra money in your pocket! If you have something that is brand new or only worn once for a special occasion, you could always sell it to a consignment store or on places like eBay and Poshmark.

4.) Healthier Mind

Overall, purging your closet is healthy for your mind. Are you keeping a dress just because it would make the perfect date or party dress? What about that one pair of jeans you keep just in case you decide to become a little more toned and lose ten pounds? Subconsciously, having items like these in your closet is a disadvantage. They put unrealistic manifestations of what ifs and perfection in your head. Instead, sell or donate those items and look for new ones if that hypothetical event ever comes.
